the black box

but its a good night afterall.
a short break from studio work is just essential :P

Goodbye but Goodbye

Finally I watched this award winning signature play by Kearen Pang. A story about a lonely children book author, who refuses to say goodbye, and keep escaping from the past by simply lying to herself. Hm, its the idea that sometimes when you keep repeating a lie, you will eventually believe in it, that it is actually true, a fact.

When the character was trying to search for new inspiration, she reminisces about a long lost childhood friend. There it went a sequence of flashbacks to her old days, how she met this childhood friend, growing up together by the sea, going to school and then at last departing. I would say Pang has one of the best body language I have seen for some years, she reminded me of Lam Siu Bo back in the Border Town. Usually the more slender figure would appear to be more expressive on stage, stretching arms and big steps forward but her being tiny is very composed, and powerful. Especially when seeing her mimicking a 8 year old, a definite laugh for all audiences. Eye-catching and very persuasive, and thats all you need on stage.

The punch lines are okay, the usual wordplay you get in nowadays Hong Kong, and you can just tell how the performer is very much infleunced by Dayo Wong's stand ups, the rhythm of delivery and some cynicism. Good music, maybe a personal favourism going to accordion, sustaining a lingering atmosphere til the very end. But I would say the finale was too deliberate with the excerpts of personal letters, sometimes 'wrapping things up' is really unnecessary.
